Hundeschutz für Aufzüge

[English version below :)]

Sometime in spring 2014 I saw a gruel video on Youtube. A dog was outside of an elevator, his mistress in the elevator and when the door closed, the dog was almost strangled by its leash. I do not own a dog myself, so I’ve never thought about this problem. But there are many such videos on the Internet and one can only hope that they mostly end in a good way. (Update in May 2015: It happened again, this time Nuremberg, the city I live in, and sadly it even ended with a dead dog.) Such a dog leash is very strong and once the dog is raised or lowered, there is not much the owner can do about it. Some people apparently even broken their fingers until they could loosen the leash.

At some point I  had the idea to arrange a cutting knife close to the door to easily cut the leash and save the dog in an emergency. I even filed the German utility model DE 20 2014 005 758 U1 in July 2014. Just for fun, as I am working in the field of patents. But when I had the utility model, I thought, I can try my luck and started writing some elevator manufacturers. I somehow expected that there might be some interest to offer such a system for retrofitting. But no one really wants to install it, even though it is not expensive and does not affect the rest of the elevator (or does not have to). Most did not even send a „received with thanks“ email or something similar, it falls on deaf ears. Since then, I wonder why that is so. The problem is real, as those gruesome videos show it. The solution is not expensive or complicated. It is really incomprehensible to me.

I even had a nice phone call with the head of IP of a big German elevator manufacturer. He explained me that their engineers found no way to implement the solution in a way, in which the inspection workers are save from the knives. There are some ways explained in the utility model however. They also offered me a very low sum, not more than we charge at work for drafting a patent, making the invention itself worthless. The reason might be that this German company gives security relevant patents freely to its competitors, so that everyone can implemented safety ideas without having to pay for them, which after all is a great idea.

Aufzugmesser

(It has to be said that new elevators (within about the last 15 years) have a light curtain, which discovers very small objects in the door area. Even a thin dog leash is detected and the doors then will not close. However, this only applies to newer elevators . Older ones doe not have to be retrofitted to the current level of safety regulations and I do not know how widespread light curtains are outside of Germany.)
